Risk Management — Day 10 of the Educational Series

How can you protect your capital and ensure long-term success like the professionals?
Why do most trading accounts fail?
The main reason new traders lose money isn’t poor technical analysis, but trading with excessively large position sizes (over-leveraging) and ignoring stop-loss orders. Protecting your capital is your top priority.
The power of the risk-to-reward ratio (R:R):
With a 1:3 ratio, you can lose 60% of your trades (winning just 4 out of 10) and still make an excellent profit:
6 losing trades × (1% risk) = 6% loss.
4 winning trades × (3% profit) = 12% profit.
Final result: a net profit of 6%, even though your win rate was only 40%!
Steps for applying risk management before every trade:
Set your stop-loss level based on technical analysis (below a support level or above a resistance level).
Calculate the dollar amount at risk (for example, 1% of a $10,000 account = $100).
Calculate the appropriate lot size so that your loss does not exceed this amount if the price hits your stop-loss order.
