At midday on 10-12, news of an Upbit listing lit the fuse: $RSR surged from 0.0016, reaching an intraday high of +49%. Futures open interest doubled in 4 hours (2.1 billion → 4.9 billion tokens), then continued piling up in the evening, peaking at around 6 billion tokens.
17:22 Funding rate: -1.79%. Shorts are betting heavily on a drop. Our first observation: hold above 0.0023, and short covering becomes fuel; break below 0.0021, and the story is over.
21:25 Funding rate is pinned at -2.00%, while the price is still above 0.0023. At 00:00, another round of costly tuition was paid.
The overnight script reversed: the price broke below 0.0023 and then 0.0021, bottoming at 0.001996 (a 17%+ pullback from the high), while gains evaporated to +21.9%.
This morning, the funding rate was -1.33% at 09:25, then had converged to -0.40% by 09:35. Open interest fell back to 5.4 billion tokens, but that's still 5x what it was before the explosive rally—the money is still on the table; it's just that the fighting is dying down.
【Lesson One】A deeply negative funding rate isn't a buy signal; it's a scoreboard for both sides wearing each other down.
Shorts paying 2% each round shows they're confident, but that confidence was crushed by a 17% drop. The funding rate only tells you who's paying to hold a position, not where the market is headed.
【Lesson Two】A view without a level that would prove it wrong isn't a real view.
The only useful sentence this round was: “If it breaks below 0.0021, the story is over.” When it broke, there was no rescue—just a cascade of stop-losses. First thing to do when watching the market: write down the price that would prove you wrong, and set an alert.
【Lesson Three】Chasing the rally means paying a latecomer's fee.
The longs who bet on a rebound above 0.00235 last night are now buried the deepest. Marginal buying power was strongest early on. After the peak retracement, every rebound needs more money than the last.
【What to watch next】Will the funding rate return to zero at the 16:00 settlement? Support below: 0.0018. If it regains and holds above 0.0021, everything above this gets thrown out and rewritten.
Bonus: GTC, today's #2 gainer (+38%), is following yesterday's RSR playbook. But its funding rate is only -0.008%, and open interest is falling—nobody is paying to bet on this one; it's a spot-only pump. Different game, different way to watch.
