Japan’s producer price index (PPI) came in at 6.8%, well below expectations of 7.6%.

This downside surprise is being welcomed, as producer prices rose less than expected, which could ease pressure on business costs and future consumer prices.

However, a rate of 6.8% still indicates considerable inflation.
Prices are rising, albeit less sharply than forecast.
