If you can’t even explain what the “crypto market” is, there’s no need to feel embarrassed. Experienced traders can skip ahead; the following is just a simple 3-step guide for everyday people to figure out whether this market has anything to do with them.

Step 1: Look first. Don’t rush to buy.

Open $BTC, $ETH , and $BNB to look at their price trends, trading volume changes, and project announcements. The point isn’t to guess whether prices will rise or fall, but to get a feel for how things work: the volatility of digital assets is unlike anything you’re used to with bank deposits or funds.

That’s the value of following the market. When someone says “there’s an opportunity” or “the risk is huge,” you can check the actual market data for yourself instead of rushing in based on a single comment.

Step two: learn only the most common terms.

Bitcoin, mining, airdrops, spot trading, futures, and liquidations—you don’t need to master them all at once. Whenever you come across a term, ask three questions: What makes it work? Where might the returns come from? What’s the worst-case scenario?

Especially when you see claims of high returns, look for an explanation of the risks first. If a project can’t clearly explain how you could lose money, steer clear, no matter how much buzz it’s generating.

Step three: decide whether it’s worth your attention.

If you’re not interested or aren’t willing to take on volatility, it’s completely fine not to participate. Not knowing about crypto doesn’t mean you’re falling behind, and technological progress doesn’t mean everyone has to chase the latest trend.

If you’re genuinely curious, you could start by bookmarking a few major cryptocurrencies and observing them for a while. Just look at their prices, announcements, and market reactions, and avoid trading in ways you don’t understand. It’s more important to understand things before deciding than to place a trade because your emotions are pushing you to.

Take just one step today: open a cryptocurrency’s page, spend 10 minutes looking at its price movements and announcements, then ask yourself, “Do I really understand it?”
