Bank of England Deputy Governor Sarah Breeden said the U.K. is not in a hurry to launch a retail central bank digital currency, known as the digital pound or "Britcoin." According to Odaily, she made the remarks during the International Monetary Fund annual meeting and said any decision on the digital pound project will depend on whether other innovative payment options, including commercial stablecoins and tokenized bank deposits, can deliver the benefits of tokenization.

Breeden also said she wants U.K. businesses to develop successful pound stablecoins, so that U.K. residents and companies do not have to rely only on dollar stablecoins to use innovative payment services.
