I see the term "altcoin season" in the comments very often, and I used to think it was just slang for “alts are going up”🌱. Turns out, it has a specific, measurable criterion—not just a feeling among the crowd.

The classic definition: altseason begins when around 75% of the top 50 coins by market cap outperform $BTC over the past 90 days. This is the figure used by the Altcoin Season Index—the best-known public indicator of this phenomenon.

The opposite state is "Bitcoin season," when most of the capital is concentrated in $BTC , and altcoins lag behind.

Key signs:
— $BTC dominance (its share of the total market cap) is steadily declining—capital is flowing into altcoins;
— trading volumes are rising not only for top altcoins, but also for mid-tier coins—money is spreading “outward”;
— a growing number of new listings and hype around smaller projects—a related, though not essential, symptom.

A note for beginners: altseason is a retrospective indicator; it confirms what has already happened rather than predicting the future.

This isn’t investment advice—I’m explaining the terminology, not urging anyone to act based on the indicator.
