Hardware wallet turns into a hardware backdoor
A brand-new, unopened Ledger Flex bought at Singapore airport had scratches on its casing. Once it was opened up, there was an extra circuit board soldered onto the bottom, with a few wires—just waiting for the moment you type in your recovery phrase. The same trick was used with the same model from a channel in Malaysia, and it’s already cost people $86 million.
The cold wallet’s not great at heat dissipation, but it sure did a great job of emptying its owner’s wallet. In the end, this bill was paid by people who believed that “keeping your private keys yourself is the safest option.”
Anyone still holding onto a Ledger: dare to plug it in and open it up again right now? Check in below—and while you’re at it, tell us when you last used your recovery phrase.
