This week, the U.S. government transferred about 17,733 bitcoin $BTC to Coinbase Prime. Of those, 12,267 are linked to the Bitfinex hack, and the marked holdings fell from 324,527 to 306,795.
I see this as a custody handoff, not spot selling. Coinbase Prime has been the U.S. Marshals Service’s custodian since 2024. These coins are still subject to claims, and the DOJ wants $BTC returned to the victims. The current price is 83442.58 USDT, down 0.16% over 24 hours; the price barely reacted to the transfer. Another roughly 1,200 coins from FTX and HashFlare may instead be handled through cash compensation.
