Ledger is investigating transaction-signing devices distributed by CryptoBilis in Southeast Asia that were fitted with unauthorized hardware. The component can read the 24-word recovery phrase displayed on the screen and transmit it externally via LTE.
According to an official statement from Ledger, the company confirmed the incident on October 10 based on a device belonging to an affected user. The Ledger Donjon security team found the implant inside the device casing.
Donjonâs analysis showed that the component reads the content displayed on the screen to decode the recovery phrase during initial setup, then transmits it via LTE using an integrated eSIM. It does not modify the secure chip, the system, or the transaction-signing process.
All confirmed cases of lost funds related to the incident disclosed on October 9 involved devices sold through CryptoBilis. The distributor has stopped selling Ledger devices.
The total number of affected users and the value of the losses have not been verified. Ledger is also investigating reports of similar implanted hardware involving other distributors and regions.
