$XRP just bounced off a three-week low, while $BTC V-shaped back from below $81,000—this morning’s move was all driven by a scare in South Korean stocks.
What happened: South Korea’s KOSPI plunged more than 6% intraday, falling below 6,000 points. Samsung and SK Hynix both tumbled 8%, and Nasdaq futures followed lower. The panic spread straight to crypto: $BTC briefly fell below $81,000 in the early hours, while $XRP touched a three-week low. More than $775 million in positions were liquidated over 24 hours, mostly leveraged longs getting flushed out.
But here’s the interesting part: the panic faded faster than it arrived. $BTC reclaimed $83,000, and $XRP turned positive too. The crypto market pulled off a bit of “decoupling” from South Korean stocks.
My take: this drop wasn’t about crypto fundamentals. It was contagion from Korea’s AI bubble and a cascade of margin liquidations. Tom Lee even warned that a wave of margin calls in South Korea’s securities market could trigger knock-on effects in crypto. But the market has already cast its vote: prices recovered after just half a day of losses, suggesting that dip buyers on the sidelines care about price levels, not sentiment. Also today, a whale that had been dormant for six years moved 4,582 $BTC (about $378 million), but didn’t send it to an exchange—it was simply spread across five addresses. That looks more like portfolio reallocation than a signal of selling.
The real test is near $84,500: there’s a supply overhang of nearly 800,000 $BTC there. Breaking above it would signal a reversal; failing to do so would make this just a relief rally. CPI is coming up, so don’t add leverage recklessly before the data comes out.
Do you think $XRP has finished its decline and is ready to reverse, or will it resume grinding lower after this bounce? Share your thoughts in the comments 👇
