Holy crap, Nvidia’s AI supply chain is starting to feel the pressure too! SK Hynix shares plunged 7.1%—the memory chip market may really be in for a shake-up this time!
Guys, we’ve all seen just how crazy the AI boom has been over the past two years.
Nvidia sells computing power, while SK Hynix has made a fortune from its high-bandwidth HBM memory. For a while, the market treated it as a hot commodity in the AI supply chain.
But now, competitors are starting to catch up!
China’s ChangXin Memory Technologies is advancing its next-generation DRAM technology, while Samsung and Micron are also stepping up their efforts to win HBM orders.
Progress in domestic technology doesn’t mean it has already caught up with SK Hynix’s ability to mass-produce high-end HBM. But competition is definitely heating up in a market once dominated by a handful of giants.
Even more concerning, the AI supply chain has seen massive upfront investment. If tech giants slow their capital spending, memory makers’ capacity and profit outlooks could take a hit.
My current outlook is cautious.
SK Hynix could see a short-term oversold bounce, but repeating the one-way rally we saw in the past will be much harder now.
What will really determine the competitive landscape from here is yield, capacity, and customer orders in the HBM4 era.
In the past, you could buy the AI market leader and just sit back and win. Going forward, pick the wrong part of the AI supply chain, and you might not even catch a rebound!
This time around, I’m paying closer attention to changes in competition across the memory industry, and I’m in no rush to chase prices higher.
