【A long post by Musk sends Korean memory stocks tumbling again: SK Hynix falls more than 9%】
Over the weekend, Chinese memory maker ChangXin Memory Technologies announced progress on its 4F² DRAM architecture, with DDR5 server memory expected to launch by the end of the year.
The market interpreted this as a sign that China could catch up sooner than expected, since Samsung won’t mass-produce similar technology until 2028. As a result, Micron, SK Hynix, and Samsung all fell about 4% on Monday, while SanDisk dropped around 6%.
Some initially thought the sell-off was unwarranted: an announcement doesn’t mean mass production, AI demand remains unmet, and this isn’t HBM.
But Musk believes that once China figures out mass production, it often ramps up capacity faster than the rest of the world combined. Lithium batteries and solar panels are examples, and standardized memory could follow the same pattern. When the Korean market opened today, SK Hynix fell more than 9% again, while Samsung dropped nearly 7%.
For the crypto market, the direct impact of this sell-off is limited, but memory stocks have been one of the main drivers of this year’s AI rally. If sentiment around the AI sector continues to cool, risk assets overall could also become more cautious. Keep an eye on market sentiment around $BTC and AI-related tokens in the short term.
