$3 million was stolen. This letter to the hacker is heartbreaking to read.

The on-chain message reads: “Even if you’re willing to return 80%, or even 50%, I’d be incredibly grateful. This is my retirement savings. It affects my life and my children’s future. Please, give the money back.”

In the age of AI, never underestimate the security risks of crypto assets—especially with all kinds of DeFi protocols on-chain!

If you’re capable of managing your private keys, keep large, long-term assets in cold storage whenever possible (hardware wallets, offline phones, etc.). Buy devices through official channels, back up your seed phrase offline, and never share it with anyone.

If you’re not confident in your ability to self-custody, you’re better off using a large centralized exchange that’s compliant and available in your region, such as Binance, OKX, Coinbase, or Upbit. Set up two-factor authentication, withdrawal address whitelists, and account segregation. Don’t carelessly keep your entire net worth in a hot wallet that’s constantly connected to various DApps.
