You can tell something’s off with today’s market at a glance. USDC trading volume is $4.02 billion, more than three times BTC’s—the money has no intention of entering the market; it’s all sitting on the sidelines watching the show. When prices plunge and stablecoins top the trading-volume charts, that’s the clearest sign of risk aversion.
BTC is down 2.95% to 81,492, a relatively modest decline. But SOL has plunged 7.63%, XRP is down 6.18%, and DOGE has fallen 6.61%—major altcoins are generally losing more than twice as much as BTC. This isn’t a normal pullback; capital is fleeing risk assets. NEAR has it even worse, down 15.61%, with $253 million in trading volume as it sinks. This kind of price-and-volume action doesn’t look like panic selling—it looks more like someone actively clearing out their position as the market weakens.
The most glaring case is STRK. It fell 29.31%, with 64 million in trading volume, while also ranking fourth on CoinGecko’s trending list. After seeing the crash, retail traders rushed to search for it—but are they buying the dip or just watching the panic unfold? Trending lists are never buy signals; they’re more like emotional barometers. STRK making the trending list shows that fear is spreading, not that smart money is positioning itself. BUNKER topping the list is another signal: once the market falls far enough, money starts chasing volatile small-cap coins for a thrill. NEAR is also seventh on the trending list, yet its price fell 15%—showing that attention and price action are completely disconnected.
The gainers list makes the point even clearer. GTC rose 30.75% and RSR gained 19.50%, but trading volume for both was under 40 million. Gains in pools this small are practically meaningless; they’re simply a way for capital to find an outlet in extreme market conditions. The only other assets still posting gains are stablecoins like USDC, USD1, RLUSD, and FDUSD. This isn’t a rally—it’s a move to shelter.
Some people are pointing to GTC and RSR on the gainers list and shouting, “There’s a hot narrative.” I see that as a sign of poor liquidity. On days when the broader market plunges, small coins rally against the trend on very little capital. It has nothing to do with fundamentals. The signal worth watching is in these figures: SUI fell 10.29% and ZEC fell 10.56% from their benchmark prices to actual trading—established layer-1 coins with narratives from the previous cycle are no gentler than meme coins when they fall. In a bear market, there are no safe positions; there’s only the difference between falling early and falling late.
Don’t rush to buy the dip in this kind of market. Stablecoin trading volume remains high, altcoin losses aren’t narrowing, and the trending list is full of crashing coins. When all three conditions are met, it means selling pressure hasn’t fully played out. Money is flowing out, not in.
Right now, I’m mostly in U. That’s not being timid—it’s about waiting for a point where the direction is clear. Did you sell at a loss today, or are you holding on?
