BTC Dominance Is the Map, Not the Territory

Everyone tracks Bitcoin dominance as a signal for altcoin season — but most misread what it actually measures.

BTC dominance rises in two very different scenarios: (1) genuine risk-off rotation where capital exits alts into Bitcoin as the safest crypto asset, and (2) alt market caps falling faster than Bitcoin during broad sell-offs. These look identical on the dominance chart but require opposite responses.

The real altcoin rotation signal is not dominance falling alone — it is dominance falling while total crypto market cap is rising. That combination tells you capital is flowing INTO alts, not just redistributing within a shrinking pie.

$ETH/BTC ratio is the cleanest leading indicator. Historically, when ETH begins outperforming BTC on a 30-day basis, broader alt momentum follows within 4-8 weeks. $SOL has emerged as a secondary confirmation — if both ETH and SOL are gaining on BTC pairs simultaneously, the rotation is broad-based.

$BNB dominance within its own ecosystem also matters: rising BNB price alongside BSC on-chain activity suggests retail re-engagement, a classic late-cycle altcoin signal.

For mid-cap alts, wait for the second wave. They rarely lead — they confirm.

Dominance is a compass, not a destination. Read it in context.
