📰 US hopes diesel deal will bring Putin back to the negotiating table
According to Reuters, US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner told Ukrainian officials during talks in Miami that Washington’s decision to allow exports of Russian diesel fuel was intended to encourage Moscow to return to peace negotiations.
According to sources, the US representatives acknowledged that Russian President Vladimir Putin was still not ready to negotiate an end to the war. However, they argued that a diesel fuel agreement could soften Moscow’s position by demonstrating Trump’s willingness to make economic deals with Russia.
The talks also addressed possible security guarantees for Ukraine and broader efforts to resume trilateral negotiations.
A source close to the Kremlin said that Putin would return to the negotiating table only after Russia takes control of the remaining 11% of Donbas territory currently under Ukrainian control. This would allow him to present the outcome at home as a victory.
