AI helps the global economy grow, but at the same time it can fundamentally change the labor market. 40% of jobs worldwide are at risk of transformation or disappearance.

The investment boom in artificial intelligence is supporting global economic growth at around 3%, but in the future it could significantly change the labor market. This was stated by IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva during a speech in Bangkok, Reuters reported on Monday, October 12.

According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), around 40% of jobs worldwide could be transformed, lose value, or disappear altogether.

She said that large-scale investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure is helping the global economy grow despite energy supply problems. “Artificial intelligence—you can love it or hate it, but it’s already here,” Georgieva stressed.

The economic benefits could be particularly significant for Asian countries that manufacture AI equipment. According to the Fund’s chief, the investment boom could boost growth in Asia’s advanced economies by 0.5–1%, and in the region’s emerging economies by 0.2–0.8%.

At the same time, new technologies will change the skills required of workers and the very nature of work. “This is a technology that is fundamentally changing everything. It is completely changing how we work and live,” Georgieva noted.
