NVIDIA and Cisco announce USFP, a new pluggable optical module standard for AI infrastructure networks, with electrical signaling speeds of 400 Gb/s per lane and total bandwidth of up to 12.8 Tb/s per module.

USFP stands for Ultra Small Form-factor Pluggable. It is the first module to support 400 Gb/s electrical signaling per lane, enabling additional compute systems to be connected without adding a network tier, while reducing power consumption per bit of data transmitted.

Compared with existing optical modules that support 200 Gb/s per lane, USFP offers 4 times the bandwidth density and 1.3 times the energy efficiency. NVIDIA and Cisco are collaborating with TE Connectivity and Amphenol to build a multi-vendor USFP hardware ecosystem.
