【Watching FIL rise, I’ll admit my fingers are itching—but this time, I’m choosing to think one thing through first】

To be honest, FIL’s recent moves have me feeling a little tempted.

It’s up 8% in 24 hours, 9.5% in a week, and nearly 50% in a month. This isn’t some coin riding a hype wave—the gains seem to be driven by sustained buying. More importantly, trading volume has picked up, exceeding what you’d expect from normal market-cap fluctuations.

The time I got burned in 2017, I jumped in when I saw this kind of volume spike and the price starting to move. I thought the market was taking off, but it turned out the big players were dumping. I won’t claim I’ve gotten smarter this time, but at least I need to ask myself one question first.

When trading volume picks up, who’s buying?

FIL surged to $237 in 2021. Now it’s at $1.20. It’s down 99%, and people stopped paying attention ages ago. The storage sector has been telling its story for years, but progress bringing IPFS into real-world use has been pretty lukewarm. The market’s long since grown tired of it. But here’s the question: when nobody’s paying attention, who would be building a position now?

Institutions wouldn’t. Retail traders wouldn’t. So there are only two possibilities left: either the big players are orchestrating a pump to sell into, or someone with money really does know something in advance.

I can’t tell which it is. But I’ve seen it happen too many times: before a truly big move, trading volume always starts acting unusual first. The problem is, you can’t tell whether it’s the opening act or the finale.

What’s my mindset right now? Honestly, I’m tempted. But I set myself a rule this year: when I see a signal, first think through “what would it mean for this to actually come to pass?”

The case for FIL is storage. The business case for storage is that companies are willing to pay to store data. But are companies actually using Filecoin to store data at scale right now? Has anything genuinely exciting emerged from the ecosystem?

If big money is positioning itself, it must be betting on some catalyst. I don’t know what that is, so I won’t blindly follow along.

But I’ll keep watching. FIL has been moving sideways in the 1.1–1.3 range for a long time, and volatility is contracting. After this kind of pattern, it either makes a big move up or a big move down. When it breaks out, whether trading volume continues to rise will be key.

What’s your mindset right now? Are you willing to follow this FIL move? Or are you like me—tempted by what you see, but still not making a move?
