Bitwise CEO Hunter Horsley compared the market sizes when gold and Bitcoin ETFs launched: the global gold market was worth about $2.5 trillion in 2004, while Bitcoin’s market was worth about $2 trillion in 2024.
In a post on X, Horsley emphasized that both gold and Bitcoin already had large market sizes when their respective ETF products emerged. His comparison focused on the size of the two asset markets at the time their ETFs launched.
Spot Bitcoin ETFs in the US were approved for listing in 2024, opening up another way for traditional investors to access BTC through regulated financial products. Gold ETFs have gradually become a way for institutional and individual investors to participate in the gold market.
