South Korea has $1.1 billion worth of unclaimed stocks. Could you be the next person to discover a hidden treasure?

As of the end of August, the Korea Securities Depository was holding unclaimed stocks worth approximately $1.1 billion, belonging to more than 26,000 shareholders. These shares mainly came from capital increases and stock dividends, but issues with nominee holders listed on shareholder registers have prevented the actual owners from claiming them.

Some of the owners of these unclaimed shares never received notices because they had moved. The Korea Securities Depository plans to work with telecommunications providers to notify shareholders by text message. However, it expects to reach fewer than half of them in 2025. This shows that in the high-tech age, traditional methods of getting in touch are no longer enough to solve the problem.

Will South Korea adopt more effective technological solutions to address the issue of unclaimed stocks in the future?
