$93 million was drained through a chip hidden inside a hardware wallet. $USDT has just frozen $10 million of it.
Ledger confirmed that it found an unusual chip installed inside at least one hardware wallet sold through CryptoBilis, an authorized reseller. The theft involving this chip drained around $93.2 million in user assets.
Multiple independent blockchain-tracking sources have confirmed these figures, and Tether has frozen $10 million in USDT from the stolen funds.
As of October 11, around $81 million remained on-chain and is still being traced. A former CryptoBilis executive denies any involvement — Ledger still describes this as an ongoing investigation and has not determined who is responsible.
If you’ve ever bought a hardware wallet from somewhere other than Ledger or an official reseller, now’s the time to check your device and consider whether anyone else may have accessed your seed phrase.
One thing to watch: Will Ledger publish a list of affected batches so users can check their devices?
Personal observation, not investment advice
