What does Open Interest (OI) mean?
If both the buyer and seller in a trade are opening new positions, open interest rises; if both are closing positions, open interest falls; if one is opening and the other is closing, open interest stays unchanged.
A rise in open interest only means that the number of positions in the contract has increased; it does not show whether bulls or bears are in control, since every new position involves one side going long and the other going short.
