Don’t see an exchange get a license and immediately assume $BTC and $ETH are about to take off. This license is a step toward compliant operations, not a signal about market direction.

According to an October 12 report by BlockBeats, Payward, the parent company of Kraken, has received full market approval from Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA). It plans to enter the UAE market as a regulated virtual asset service provider (VASP), serving retail, professional, and institutional investors. According to the announcement, once services officially launch, local users will be able to trade spot and on margin using pairs denominated in UAE dirhams (AED), deposit and withdraw dirhams, and access on-chain staking, xStocks, and Krak transfer services. Institutional clients will also be able to use over-the-counter spot trading and Kraken Prime. Subject to regulatory approval, Payward expects to roll out crypto derivatives and more yield-generating products between late 2026 and 2027, and to open its embedded trading infrastructure to regional partners. The Middle East has become a key battleground for exchanges competing for market share over the past two years. Binance, OKX, and Bybit are all vying for the same high-net-worth clients and regional capital. The first to secure and operationalize licenses can connect fiat channels, institutional custody, and derivatives liquidity sooner.

Two things to watch: First, this full market approval covers regulatory requirements and the scope of services, rather than being a temporary or restricted license. Second, what really matters next is whether the UAE business can bring institutional funds into spot, margin, and eventually derivatives trading—and whether the licensing milestone drives progress on a listing or fundraising. Are you more interested in how the service rolls out for users in the Middle East, or in how it could reshape competition among exchanges?
