$86 million is gone, and Ledger admitted it today.

CoinDesk reported on October 12: Ledger confirmed that an unauthorized hardware implant was found in at least one device involved in the incident. $86M–$93M was stolen from more than 300 wallets—and every known case involved devices sold by Southeast Asian reseller CryptoBilis. Devices bought directly from Ledger’s official website were unaffected.

In plain terms: with hardware wallets, the seller matters more than the brand. Buying from a third-party reseller is like copying down your recovery phrase and handing it over to someone else.

My advice: ① Buy only from the official website ② Verify the device as soon as it arrives ③ Use multisig or keep funds in separate hot and cold wallets for large amounts. If you’ve already bought from a third party, move your coins to a new wallet ASAP.
