Altcoins are starting to go wild, but is altseason really here?
As of 10/12, the total crypto market cap is around $2.8 trillion, while BTC dominance remains at 59.35%.
But things are much livelier elsewhere in the market.
The meme sector is up around 9.76% over the past 24 hours, AI is up 7.06%, and privacy coins are up 6.45%.
By comparison, Layer 1 is up only about 1.62%, and Layer 2 around 1.75%.
There’s an interesting phenomenon in markets like this.
People see certain altcoins jump 30%, 50%, or even more in a day, and it’s easy to get the impression that the entire market is taking off.
But BTC dominance is still close to 60%, which means we can’t yet say that capital has broadly rotated into altcoins.
More importantly, U.S. inflation data is due this week.
If inflationary pressures persist, interest rate expectations could once again affect market risk appetite.
For now, it looks more like capital is chasing a handful of high-volatility themes than all altcoins entering a bull market together.
The biggest difference between these two market conditions is that in the former, picking the wrong coin could mean missing out on the entire rally, while the latter usually involves broader market participation.
So when you see a sea of green on the gainers list, don’t rush to declare altseason.
A true altseason shouldn’t be proven by just a few coins skyrocketing.
