7 days, 82%: $STRK flipped the L2 table over, citing “quantum doom”
The entire L2 sector took off today, but the leader did so with what sounded like a “breakup announcement”: Starknet said it might not want to be Ethereum’s L2 anymore.
◆ What happened
On October 8, StarkWare CEO posted that Starknet is “actively considering” transitioning into an independent L1, with the goal of becoming the first fully quantum-resistant network by 2027. The logic is straightforward: as an L2, its security ceiling is Ethereum itself. With the quantum threat approaching and Ethereum upgrades moving too slowly, it would be better to go it alone and set its own upgrade schedule.
◆ Data (October 12, cross-checked across multiple sources)
- Up 80–82% over 7 days, peaking at $0.126—its highest price since last December; market cap doubled from $360M to $807M
- Up 20.52% in 24 hours to $0.1249; open interest up 34.74% to $196.8 million—real money is flowing in
- But TVL is only $168 million (+5–7%): the token price doubled, while on-chain locked value rose by only single digits. Pure narrative-driven action
- Still 97% below its all-time high; this rally is just a bounce off the floor
◆ My take
Narrative > fundamentals. That’s how these tokens work: they rise without reason, and they fall without reason. Anyone who caught the 40% single-day gain on October 9 has already made money. Chasing now is basically carrying the early buyers. More importantly, 127 million STRK tokens unlock on October 15. After such a sharp rally, the sell-pressure script has practically written itself.
In my opinion, the quantum narrative sounds exciting, but “considering a move to L1” is still a long way from happening, while much of it is already priced in. If you want to get involved, wait and see what happens after the October 15 unlock. If you’re already holding, don’t get greedy—set a take-profit level. This is just my personal opinion, not investment advice.
