🐕 While other memes bounce around on the back of a single tweet, DOGE is doing something decidedly “un-Meme”: building an EVM layer.

According to CoinGecko and publicly available information, Dogecoin launched the DogeOS public testnet on September 30—an EVM-compatible application layer intended to help developers build an ecosystem around DOGE. Around the same time, memes with real-world brands, like PENGU, have been turning their jokes into consumer products through brick-and-mortar retail and IP collaborations. These two paths are really addressing the same question: can memes develop real utility?

My take: the utility narrative is unlikely to have much impact on valuations in the short term—around 90% of these assets are still priced on sentiment. But over the long term, memes with a “second-layer story” (whether it’s DogeOS’s technical layer or PENGU’s retail presence) may be more likely to survive cycle after cycle of cooling sentiment rather than go to zero. The difference isn’t whether they rise today, but whether they’re still in the game three years from now.

What’s worth watching: when DogeOS’s mainnet goes live, and whether developers actually show up to build. A testnet doesn’t equal economic value.

Do you think “technical / brand utility” can make memes more resilient, or is it just a better-sounding story? 🤔
