News broke that the Sui Foundation invested $30 million in DATA Network, which plans to migrate from its independent chain to Sui.

SUI suddenly became a topic of discussion—not just because of the investment amount, but because a chain that had been operating independently is preparing to wind down. My view: this looks more like an ecosystem expansion effort that uses funding to attract applications to migrate, but it does not yet mean that demand for SUI has increased.

Public reports confirm the investment and migration plans. According to public discussions, DATA’s tokens are expected to migrate at a 1:1 ratio, and Walrus is expected to become the default storage layer for related applications; the specific implementation arrangements still need to be verified. Data disclosed by one of the projects also says that its Trace product has recorded more than 250 million data contributions and processes over 3 million attestations per day. These figures have yet to be independently verified as well.

An investment in a project is not the same as buying SUI, and registration figures are not the same as on-chain revenue after migration. The migration timeline is still unclear. If the business ultimately fails to take off, will that $30 million have bought real demand—or just a more expensive narrative?
