Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) explained in three sentences:
Ethereum smart contracts are generally written in Solidity or Vyper, compiled into bytecode, and deployed on-chain, where the EVM executes the opcodes one by one.
Once deployed, a contract’s bytecode is fixed and visible to everyone; whether its source code is available depends on whether the developer has published it on a blockchain explorer.
When using EVM-compatible chains, addresses may look the same, so be sure to check which chain your assets are on.
