Sui Foundation Invests $30M in DATA Network — The AI Data Race Is Getting Serious

I think the most interesting part of Sui’s $30 million investment in DATA Network isn’t the amount. It’s the kind of infrastructure Sui is choosing to back.

The strategic investment makes Sui Foundation the network’s largest institutional holder. DATA Network and its Trace registry are joining the Sui ecosystem, with Walrus becoming the default storage layer for DATA Foundation applications.

Here’s why that matters.

AI models need more than computing power. They need reliable training data, clear usage rights, verifiable origins, and a way to compensate contributors. Trace is designed to track those rights and the provenance of data. It has reportedly registered more than 250 million contributions and processes over 3 million receipts per day on average.

The bigger move is connecting these pieces.

Sui provides the blockchain infrastructure. Walrus provides data storage. Trace provides provenance and rights tracking. Together, they aim to make AI training data easier to verify, license, and use.

One detail traders should not overlook: DATA Network’s standalone chain is expected to be retired, with existing DATA tokens migrating to Sui on a 1:1 basis. The detailed transition timeline remains pending, so holders should wait for official instructions rather than assume the migration is complete.

My takeaway: the competition in AI isn’t only about who builds the smartest model. It’s also about who builds the trusted infrastructure behind the data those models learn from.

That’s where this partnership gets interesting.
