The crypto ecosystem has another heavyweight partnership: the Sui Foundation has announced a strategic investment of $30 million in DATA Network, becoming its largest institutional token holder. The investment was accompanied by a major migration: DATA Network will abandon its standalone chain and become a native protocol running on Sui, with $DATA tokens migrating to Sui at a 1:1 ratio. Decentralized storage project Walrus will serve as the default storage layer for DATA Foundation applications.

The story began in June this year, when the DATA Foundation shifted its strategic focus from general intellectual property infrastructure to AI training data and launched the Trace registry. Trace is designed to record the origins, licensing, and usage rights of AI training data, as well as to pay data contributors. According to the foundation, Trace has recorded more than 250 million contributions since launch and processes over 3 million receipts per day on average.

The purpose of this partnership is clear: AI labs urgently need real-world training data that is compliant, rights-cleared, and available for purchase. The Sui and Walrus combination aims to provide the infrastructure for hosting, licensing, and settling transactions for this data. According to reports, existing lockup and vesting arrangements will remain unchanged after the migration, with a detailed timeline to be announced ahead of the upgrade. PIP Labs CEO SY Lee will also join the Sui Foundation as a strategic advisor, further aligning the interests of both parties.

For the $SUI ecosystem, this is another step toward strengthening the “AI data layer” narrative. For DATA, it means betting its future growth on the reach and engineering capabilities of a mainstream public blockchain.
