🚨 Serious vulnerability revealed in the XRP Ledger! Could XRP be “minted out of thin air”?
If an asset could bypass its supply limits, be created out of thin air by an attacker, and then spent normally, would you still focus only on its price?
According to an official disclosure from the XRP Ledger, xrpld version 3.4.1 fixed an integer overflow vulnerability in the payment engine, with potentially significant implications!
⚠️ How serious was this vulnerability?
🔴 1. Bypassing supply safeguards An attacker could potentially use hundreds of specially crafted offers, together with a payment, to trigger an integer overflow and mint XRP out of thin air.
🔴 2. The amount minted could far exceed the total supply The vulnerability could bypass safeguards against creating new XRP, allowing an anomalous amount to be minted—far exceeding XRP’s normal total supply—and spent normally.
🔴 3. Potentially long period of exposure According to the disclosure, the vulnerability may have existed since 2015. This means a flaw in the code could have remained hidden in the system for a long time.
🛡️ The good news: the vulnerability has been fixed!
📅 September 22: Researchers submitted the vulnerability through the bug bounty program.
📅 September 25: xrpld version 3.4.1 was released, fixing the issue.
📅 October 9: A related fix for a vulnerability in the validation of Batch transaction wrapper fields, also fixed in the same version, was activated on the mainnet.
✅ As of the disclosure, the team had found no evidence that the vulnerability had been exploited.
💡 What truly deserves attention here is not just XRP, but the security principles of the entire blockchain industry.
📌 Remember: the real risk is often not a market downturn, but something you thought could never happen suddenly happening.
