South Korea brings bond funds on-chain
Amendments to South Korea’s Electronic Securities Act and Capital Markets Act, proposed by the Financial Services Commission, entered the legislative notice period on the 2nd of this month. The notice period closes on the 11th of next month, and the amendments will take effect on February 4 next year. Stocks, bonds, and funds will all be eligible for tokenization. The initial focus will be on institutional products: private money market funds, private bonds, and unlisted stocks held in trust. Retail access to publicly offered bond funds will have to wait until the market stabilizes.
Institutions get the first move, while retail investors face speed limits. Each OTC platform will have an annual net purchase cap of 100 million won—a new channel for growth in on-chain assets is now open.
