RWA market cap has surged to $34.9 billion, but what’s really worth paying attention to isn’t yet another “crypto concept.”

If you’re also watching on-chain ecosystems like $ETH and $BNB , there’s just one thing to focus on when judging whether RWAs have staying power: whether there are real assets behind them.

Many projects get the sequence backwards: they design a token first, then find an asset story to wrap around it. For an RWA project to work in practice, the order should be: confirm the asset first, then design how it will circulate on-chain.

When evaluating one, you can simply ask three questions.

1. Does the asset really exist?

It could be U.S. Treasuries, money market funds, hotel revenue rights, or interests in physical assets. What matters isn’t how impressive the name sounds, but whether the asset can be verified and its ownership is clear.

2. Can returns and redemptions be honored?

How holders receive distributions, how often settlements occur, and under what conditions redemptions are allowed must all be clearly stated in advance. Smart contracts can improve execution efficiency, but they cannot replace custody, legal documents, or real cash flows.

3. Is the compliance framework complete?

KYC, AML, accredited investor verification, and asset custody are all essential. JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and Citi are advancing tokenized deposit networks, while DTCC is working with nearly 40 institutions to tokenize stocks and U.S. Treasuries. The message is clear: institutions aren't bypassing regulation; they're building infrastructure within the regulatory framework.

Beyond its $34.9 billion market cap, this is an even more important catalyst to watch. Competition in RWA is shifting from “who can issue tokens first” to “who can bring real-world assets on-chain safely and compliantly.”

When following related assets, don't focus only on short-term gains. First, check the underlying assets, redemption mechanisms, and regulatory progress. If you don't understand all three, it's better to wait and see.
