The hardware wallet scene has been a real pair of geniuses these past couple of days—enough to leave self-custody believers speechless:

1️⃣ Ledger confirmed that at least one device involved had been tampered with using unauthorized hardware. Bitquery has updated its figures for the related crypto theft: 315 wallets, about $93.2 million. You buy a wallet to protect yourself from hackers, only to find you also have to watch out for hackers hiding inside the wallet.

2️⃣ A phishing post appeared on the official Coldcard X account. The company says its credentials and offline 2FA are still secure, but it can’t find any corresponding login or access records. The cause is still under investigation. The device may be offline, but the scammers sure are open for business.

There are hidden threats in the hardware and phishing scams on social accounts. In 2026, even if you’re just an honest old-school coin stacker, after buying a device you’ll also need to study supply-chain audits and online fraud prevention.

Still waiting on the gains, but I’ve already graduated from fraud prevention.
