📰 South Korea’s Jeonbuk Bank has launched the country’s first digital-asset-backed won loan program in the banking sector, initially available only to corporate customers.
The collateral is clearly defined too: BTC only, with loans restricted to business operating expenses. To be honest, this isn’t the same as ordinary people borrowing against their crypto. It looks more like the bank is testing the waters in corporate financing first.
🔥 What’s particularly important is that the bank won’t directly hold or manage the BTC. Instead, it will be held by a qualified virtual asset service provider. This limits the bank’s involvement with digital assets to the loan collateral process, making operations easier to control.
💡 If a company defaults, the bank won’t take the BTC directly either. Under the revised Civil Execution Rules, the collateral will be liquidated through procedures such as a court auction, and the proceeds will be used to recover the debt.
Jeonbuk Bank has completed stress tests and established a valuation system based on the weighted average prices from multiple global exchanges. It’s striking that the first step for traditional banks entering digital-asset lending is to establish procedures for custody, valuation, and handling defaults.
🤔 Do you think BTC-backed won loans like this will first become common in corporate financing, or will they be held back by compliance requirements and price volatility?
