About transaction finality:
Bitcoin has probabilistic finality: the more blocks are added on top of a transaction, the less likely it is to be reversed, but theoretically the probability never reaches zero.
The number of confirmations an exchange requires before crediting a deposit is essentially the point at which the transaction reaches a level of finality the platform considers safe.
