A fake security notice appeared on COLDCARD’s official Twitter account, urging users to move their assets. The post has since been deleted.
COLDCARD makes hardware wallets for Bitcoin, and it did suffer a vulnerability in the past that led to the theft of around 1,779 BTC.
Given that history, a message saying “urgent migration due to a security issue” sounds quite plausible coming from them—that’s what made this phishing attempt so convincing.
In the wake of this incident, the self-custody community $BTC will once again be debating whether official announcements can really be trusted.
