Why is Bitcoin’s maximum supply only 21 million?
Bitcoin initially rewarded 50 coins per block. The reward is then halved every 210,000 blocks, roughly once every four years. In April 2024, Bitcoin reached its fourth halving at block 840,000, reducing the block reward from 6.25 coins to 3.125.
The halving cuts the number of new bitcoins produced with each block; it doesn’t reduce the number of coins already issued.
$BTC ’s issuance schedule is hard-coded into the protocol, so no institution can issue extra coins on a whim. Current: 83610.
