Argentina’s Central Bank freezes the arrival of cryptocurrencies at banks for two years.

The long-awaited formal entry of cryptocurrencies into Argentina’s traditional banking institutions will have to wait. The Central Bank of the Argentine Republic (BCRA) confirmed that it will not promote the integration of digital assets into the banking system or payment service providers over the next two years. The decision, announced earlier by Juan Curutchet, the agency’s superintendent of financial institutions, confirms that the ban introduced in 2022 will remain in effect in the short term because of what officials described as a level of economic fragility that still calls for caution.

The official stance is a cold shower for those who expected rapid deregulation under Javier Milei’s administration. The monetary authority said that lifting these restrictions would only be considered in the event of a possible second presidential term, as it prioritizes macroeconomic stability for now over allowing financial institutions to offer customers the direct purchase, sale, or custody of crypto assets.

Despite this regulatory block on traditional banks, the ecosystem continues to move forward. While Argentina’s population remains among the world leaders in the everyday use of stablecoins and digital assets to protect against inflation, major local banking consortiums are already designing institutional initiatives based on stablecoins through parallel, independent companies, preparing for the moment when the regulatory framework finally opens the door.

Do you think the Central Bank’s caution is justified, or do you believe keeping banks on the sidelines only pushes users to operate outside the traditional system? $BTC
