Tether has confirmed that it froze funds at USDT addresses linked to the Ledger theft. The USDT contract has included a destroyBlackFunds function since 2017, allowing the balances of blacklisted addresses to be zeroed out directly. In addition, the EU’s MiCA regulation requires licensed platforms to stop offering new services for USDT by 2027. This has sparked debate about the power of stablecoins: their value lies in price stability, not ownership of the underlying assets, in contrast to BTC’s resistance to freezing. Users should decide how to store large, long-term holdings.
