⚠️ Ledger: A hardware wallet does not guarantee protection against counterfeits

Ledger is investigating reports of cryptocurrency losses among users who purchased devices from the CryptoBilis seller in Southeast Asia.

🔍 What do we know?

▪️ Ledger confirmed that an unauthorized hardware implant was found in one device belonging to an affected user.

▪️ The seller was asked to suspend sales and wallet shipments while the investigation is underway.

▪️ Independent researchers estimate potential losses at more than $86 million, but this figure has not been officially confirmed. The number of people affected has also not yet been established.

▪️ Ledger says there is currently no evidence that its own infrastructure, systems, or services have been compromised.

A hardware wallet keeps private keys offline, but does not automatically protect against a counterfeit or tampered device. If an attacker obtains your recovery phrase, they may be able to access your funds.

Cryptocurrency security depends not only on wallet technology, but also on the device’s origin and how securely the recovery phrase is stored. Self-custody of assets also means taking responsibility for protecting them.
