Argentinians are buying crypto like crazy, but Argentina’s central bank still doesn’t plan to let banks touch it!

Recently, officials at Argentina’s central bank signaled that, at least for the next year or two, banks and payment institutions may still be unable to get into the crypto business.

Restrictions introduced in 2022 remain in place: banks can’t directly offer customers crypto trading services, and payment apps can’t just add an option to buy crypto.

That’s pretty interesting.

Argentina is clearly one of Latin America’s most active countries when it comes to crypto use, and ordinary people have considerable demand for crypto assets. Yet banks have never been willing—or able—to jump in easily.

The reason isn’t hard to understand.

Many local residents are interested in crypto as a way to cope with the depreciation of the local currency, inflation, and the need to move money across borders.

But regulators are thinking about financial stability, risks to funds, and the safety of the banking system. The two sides have completely different priorities.

So I don’t think this news is a major negative for the crypto market.

After all, Argentinians weren’t relying on banks to buy crypto in the first place. The fact that the restrictions haven’t been eased simply means that the integration of traditional finance with the crypto market may be delayed even further.

What I find really interesting is this:

People in a country can be very enthusiastic about crypto, while that country’s banking system may not be willing to embrace it.

User demand and regulatory openness are two entirely different things.

So don’t assume that Argentina’s crypto market is about to die just because the country’s banks aren’t touching crypto for now.

The banks’ doors being closed doesn’t mean people will stop buying crypto. 😂
