【Old Leek Watch】Crypto adoption in Argentina is relatively high, but banks are temporarily barred from bringing crypto assets into the payment system?
Argentina has long been an important player in Latin America’s crypto market, but its latest statement has poured cold water on the “crypto banking” push.
On October 11, several crypto media outlets reported that Juan Curutchet, head of financial institution supervision at Argentina’s central bank, said crypto assets would not be brought into banking and payment channels this year. He added that any changes in the future would still depend on economic conditions and subsequent policies.
What makes this worth watching is not just that “regulators are holding the door shut,” but three real-world contradictions:
💵 First, people using crypto assets does not mean banks can provide those services directly. Users can access crypto assets through existing channels, but whether banks can directly offer trading, custody, or payment services is a separate regulatory question.
🏦 Second, banks have not completely given up on on-chain finance. Reports say some banking groups are still exploring stablecoin and on-chain funds management solutions through separate companies, but that does not mean they have been approved to offer crypto banking services to ordinary customers.
⚖️ Third, regulatory liberalization still comes with conditions. Argentina’s central bank had previously restricted regulated financial institutions from providing crypto asset services to customers, either directly or indirectly. The latest statement indicates that the short-term easing the market had been hoping for has not materialized—for now.$LUMIA
