On the afternoon of October 9 (UTC; evening in UTC+8), Tether blacklisted four $USDT vault addresses on the TRON network that THORChain uses for liquidity, freezing approximately $1.45 million in USDT. As a result, TRON swaps on THORChain that relied on these vaults were temporarily unable to complete normally. About three hours later, at approximately 15:30 UTC (23:30 on October 9 in UTC+8), the addresses were removed from the blacklist. Their on-chain balances remained intact, and TRON-related transactions subsequently resumed.

The issuer of $USDT has not publicly explained why the addresses were blacklisted or removed from the blacklist. THORChain co-founder Chad Barraford said the vaults were frozen without prior notice and then unfrozen. The incident brought into focus both the availability of cross-chain protocol vaults and stablecoin issuers’ ability to exercise immediate control over on-chain addresses: a blacklist can cut off swap routes in a short time; after the addresses were unfrozen, both the asset balances and transaction channels were available again, following an interruption of about three hours. For now, the timeline can only be reconstructed from public on-chain data and statements by the parties involved; no official written explanation has been issued.
