U.S. Congress prepares to deal a blow to Trump’s diesel deal with Putin: lawmakers want to block purchases of Russian fuel

Republican Brian Fitzpatrick said he had secured the support of at least 218 members of Congress — enough to launch a procedure that would allow a bill to be brought to the floor without going through the relevant committee or House leadership.

The initiative is aimed at reversing the easing of restrictions on purchases of Russian fuel following Trump’s deal with Putin.

Opposition to the move comes from both parties — Republicans and Democrats alike.

The White House’s decision effectively runs counter to Congress’s own efforts to tighten sanctions pressure on Russia.

Still, support for the procedure does not necessarily mean the bill will pass. But the political conflict over Russian fuel in Washington is already gaining momentum.
