📚 Crypto Class: A Step-by-Step Guide to Reading ETF Flows—the “Barometer” of Institutional Investors
Here’s a recent set of data that both newcomers and seasoned investors should know how to interpret: Since October, U.S. spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs have seen combined net outflows of nearly $1 billion, with Ethereum ETFs recording net outflows for eight consecutive trading days. Over the same period, the market saw liquidations of around $1.1 billion, and Bitcoin briefly fell below $81,000.
How should you read these figures? Three steps:
1️⃣ Look at the trend, not a single day. Net outflows over several consecutive days suggest waning institutional appetite, which is more informative than a one-day anomaly.
2️⃣ Look at “what’s being sold.” Outflows from Ethereum ETFs were clearly larger than those from Bitcoin ETFs this time, suggesting that caution is more concentrated in higher-volatility assets.
3️⃣ Look at how the three factors interact. When ETF outflows, massive liquidations, and a break below a key price level occur together, short-term volatility risk is usually amplified.
Market backdrop: $BTC is currently around $82,969 (about +0.3% over 24 hours), while $ETH is around $2,498 (+0.2%). BNB is at $746 and SOL at $109, both slightly down. Overall, the market is “bouncing, but cautious.”
