$BTC Can hardware wallets be tampered with? This security issue is more serious than you might think!
Ledger has confirmed that an unauthorized hardware implant was found in at least one affected user's device. Media reports indicate that the issue may be linked to the supply chain of distributor CryptoBilis. The attackers may have used the implanted circuitry to obtain the recovery phrase displayed during device setup. On-chain estimates of the related stolen funds have exceeded $86 million, though the total losses have yet to be confirmed.
The most unsettling thing about this incident is that many people think buying a hardware wallet means they're completely safe, while overlooking where they buy it and whether the device has been tampered with. Cold wallets can reduce some risks, but they can't solve every security problem for you.
Would you still feel comfortable buying a hardware wallet from a third-party distributor in the future?
