Stop-loss and take-profit orders explained in three sentences:
Both stop-loss and take-profit orders are conditional orders: they won’t be placed on the order book until the price reaches the set trigger price; only then will an order be submitted.
In a gap market, a stop-limit order may be placed but fail to execute, rendering the stop loss ineffective. That’s why many traders prefer to use market orders for stop losses.
Once you’ve set a stop loss, don’t move it farther away just because it’s close to being triggered; doing so often turns a small loss into a big one.
